Situated on the left bank of the Berach River, on the foothill of the Aravalli hill range, Chittorgarh is one of the popular tourist places in Rajasthan. The fort is historically very significant for the Rajputs and has given birth to some of the greatest Rajput warriors. The story of the Chittorgarh is mainly attached to Chittorgarh Fort which is spread over 700 acres, it was constructed by Mauryans between the 5th and 8th centuries, hence it was named after the Mauryan ruler, Chitrangada Mori. As per historical records, the fort was the capital of Mewar for about 834 years. It was founded by Bappa Rawal who was the founder ruler in the hierarchy of the Sisodia rulers of Mewar in 734. It is also said that the fort was presented to Bappa Rawal as part of the Solanki princess’s dowry in the 8th century. It is full of Hindu, Muslim, and Jain constructions. It is also known as the land of devotion and strength.
The astonishing battles fought in this fort give Chittaur its aura. It faced three sieges, and each time the women and children committed Jauhar (mass suicide) in the face of defeat.
The Rana Kumbha's Palace is the most popular attraction of Chittorgarh. It is located within the premises of the Chittaurgarh Fort. The Palace was constructed in 734 AD by Bappa Rawal. This palace was also associated with Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh, the wife of King Rawal Ratan Singh.
Rana Kumbha’s Palace is affiliated with Mira Bai, a famous poetess of that era. She spends her life as the widow of Prince Bhoj Raj. Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory) was built by Rana Kumbha to celebrate his 1437 routing of the Sultan of Malwa, this tower rises nine storeys and is covered with Hindu deities. The whole town can be seen in a panoramic view from the terrace.
Padmini's Palace is another major attraction, located within the fort premises. The beautiful queen Rani Padmini embodies the aura of Mewar. Legend says that the great Muslim warrior Ala-Ud-Din Khilji, having heard of her beauty, wanted to see her, and her husband King Ratan Singh allowed her can be seen in a mirror, but when he saw her, the beauty of the queen charmed the warrior who soon waged a war against the king to possess her. The first Jauhar of Chittor took place in 1303. The men went out to meet their death fighting while Rani Padmini led the women to mass suicide rather than face dishonour.
Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame) was built in the 12th Century A.D, it is 22 meters 22-meter-high structure which has 54 stairs. This tower was built in the honour of Lord Sri Adinath Rishab Deo who was the first Jain Tirthankara. Kirti Stambh is popular for its grand architecture. It is located within the Chittorgarh Fort.
Apart from this, some other attractions are Fateh Prakash Palace, Jaimal, and Patta Palaces. Jaimal and Patta Palaces is a museum, built in 19th century palace is a museum housing magnificent collection of weapons such as daggers, swords, shields, Farsa, axes, Armour, and helmets apart from this it also displays the archaeological findings and handicrafts of the area. Jaimal and Patta Palaces are located on the southern side of the Gomukh Kund. The palace was associated with Sisodia Patta and Rathore Jaimal, who defended their fort when the Mughals attacked this fort. It is located within the Chittorgarh Fort premises
